Detained NURTW President Set Free, Cautioned Against Inciteful Comments

By Nurat Uthman

The President of the National Union Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Prof. Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa, has been released from police custody. As a result, he has cautioned union members against making statements that could harm its stability.

This advice follows a disagreement within the union, which resulted in the police being called to protect the secretariat.

Prof. Baruwa held a press conference in Abuja to clarify the events that led to his detention on August 11, 2023, alongside former Lagos State chairman, Tajudeen Agbede.

According to him, the police took action because certain groups within the union were planning to protest at the national secretariat in Garki 2, Abuja.

“We are urging our members in all states to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding in their daily activities,” said Baruwa. He encouraged members to prioritize the interests of the union over personal matters.

“We want to assure you that the issue is being addressed and will be resolved soon.”

The NURTW president also appealed to all members to abide by the law and avoid any behavior that could disrupt public peace.

He emphasized that the union has maintained peace over the years and will not tolerate any threat to its reputation and achievements.

On a positive note, Baruwa praised the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and its leader, Comrade Joe Ajaero, for their quick intervention during the crisis.

“We would like to express our gratitude to the Nigerian Labour Congress, our members at the state councils, and branches for their support and involvement in this matter,” he added.

Baruwa urged state chairmen and members to work together to resolve the current dispute and focus on uplifting the union.

“We are actively working towards resolving the issue at hand,” he assured, urging members to continue their usual activities without fear.
