The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has allocated $270 million for Nigeria’s humanitarian response and emergencies.

This funding will support the country’s efforts in alleviating poverty and addressing humanitarian needs.

UNICEF’s Country Representative, Christian Mundate, and Chief of Health & HIV/AIDS, Eduardo Celades, announced this during a courtesy visit to the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, in Abuja.

The delegation also promised to provide technical support to enhance the ministry’s capacity and develop a humanitarian response protocol for Nigeria.

They also pledged to assist in establishing a National Humanitarian Situation Room or Humanitarian Emergency Operation Centre to monitor and prevent emergencies.

In response, Dr. Betta Edu expressed the government’s commitment to lifting 133 million poor Nigerians out of poverty and urged UNICEF to collaborate in poverty alleviation efforts.

She emphasized the need for swift implementation of social programs to relieve the burdens of the poor and assured transparency and accountability in the ministry’s processes.
