The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has expressed concern over an alleged illegal plan by certain members of the South West States Park Management Committee to incite violence in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, and attack the NURTW’s national secretariat in Garai 2, Abuja.
According to the union, this group intends to use a protest against the recently concluded 10th Quadrennial National Delegate Conference of the union, which took place in Lafia, Nasarawa State on August 23rd, 2023, as a cover to cause chaos and harm to FCT residents.
In a statement jointly signed by President Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa and General Secretary Anthony Asogwa Chukwudi, the union revealed that it has reliable information suggesting that the group has already brought in thugs to execute their plans and invade the National Secretariat on August 28th.
NURTW described this planned protest as a smear campaign against the union’s leadership, aimed at causing confusion and unrest.
The statement also emphasized that the union will not tolerate any unlawful actions by these disgruntled individuals, and that the police and other relevant security agencies have been notified about the group’s intentions.
The statement further disclosed, “The National Union of Road Transport Workers has discovered a plot by the South West Park Management Committee leadership to attack our National Secretariat in Garki 2 and disrupt peace in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
They plan to disguise themselves as aggrieved union members, stage a violent protest, harm people in the FCT, and damage property at the secretariat.”
“We have been informed that they have mobilized thugs and hooligans to Abuja, and they held a meeting at a hotel in Wuye on Saturday,” the statement continued.
“We are using this platform to notify the public to stay alert. These individuals are not our members; they simply aim to incite violence in the FCT. We call on the security agencies to take action and prevent law and order from breaking down.”
The group is being led by the former President of the Union, Alh. Najeem Usman Yasin, Tajudeen Badaru Agbede, Isah Aliyu Ore, James Umem, Clement Adekola, Joel Nkor, Shuaibu Bello, Musa Waziri, Alh. Alhassan Haruna ( 313 ) and Kayode Agbeyangi.
The statement, therefore, called on the plotters to rethink and desist forthwith just as it called on the security agencies to act fast and prevent a positive breakdown of law in the territory.
