In commemoration of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, Aiyelabegan Babatunde Abdulrasaq, the founder of Just Event Online, has implored political actors and security operatives, not only in Kwara but across the world to halt all forms of crime against journalists.
He said this on Thursday during an interview with Nigerian Television Authority NTA, Ilorin
The International Day to End Impunity for crimes against Journalists serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers and challenges faced by members of the media who are committed to reporting the truth.
Aiyelabegan said Journalists often find themselves at the forefront of information dissemination, acting as watchdogs for society and safeguarding democratic principles. Hence, any attack against journalists strikes at the heart of the fundamental values of a democratic society.
Aiyelabegan Abdulrasaq emphasized the critical role that media plays in any democratic nation, dubbing it as the “fourth estate of the realm.” Journalists are not merely reporters; they are essential gatekeepers who ensure accountability, transparency, and the free flow of information.
He passionately called for a safe environment where journalists can carry out their vital work without fear of harm, intimidation, or violence.
The call to action extends to all political actors and security operatives, urging them to recognize the indispensable role of journalists in upholding democracy.
He therefore enjoined on world leaders to stop war in Gaza and call for total protection for journalists in Palestine
