A Step Forward and a Misstep In Kwara State’s Education Sector

By Engr Ridwan Elemosho

The recent appointment of Prof. Shayk Lukman as the Vice Chancellor of Kwara State University (KWASU) is a commendable decision that demonstrates the government’s commitment to excellence in education.

Prof. Lukman’s impressive academic credentials and leadership experience make him an ideal candidate to spearhead the university’s growth and development.

However, the decision to host the proposed Kwara State University of Education at the College of Education (COED) Ilorin is a misstep that raises concerns about the government’s planning and foresight. While COED Ilorin has a rich history of producing quality educators, it lacks the infrastructure and resources necessary to support a full-fledged university.

Moreover, the location of COED Ilorin in the heart of Ilorin city may not provide the conducive learning environment that a university requires. The government’s decision to establish a university of education in a densely populated area may hinder the university’s potential for growth and development.

In conclusion, while the appointment of Prof. Lukman as VC KWASU is a step forward, the selection of COED Ilorin as the host campus for the proposed university of education is a misstep that needs to be reconsidered.

The government should explore alternative locations that can provide a conducive learning environment and support the growth of the university.

By doing so, the government can demonstrate its commitment to providing quality education that will benefit the people of Kwara State and Nigeria as a whole.
