Drug addiction and social vices have become a growing concern in our society, affecting individuals, families, and communities as a whole. To combat this issue, establishment of recreation centers can play a vital role in providing a healthy and constructive outlet for individuals, especially youth, to channel their energy and interests.

Consequently, Distinguished Senator Ashiru Yisa Oyelola (Deputy Senate Leader & Kwara South Senator) has embarked on the construction of Recreation Centers across the senatorial
district within the current budget cycle.

Some of the objectives of the centers are:

– To provide a safe and welcoming space for individuals to engage in recreational activities, promoting physical and mental well-being.
– To offer alternative programs and services that cater to diverse interests, skills, and ages, reducing the likelihood of drug addiction and social vices.
– To foster a sense of community, social responsibility, and civic engagement among constituents, and promoting a positive and supportive environment.
– To turn hitherto abandoned sites from criminals hideouts to relaxation spots.

Facilities and Programs designed for the centers are:

– Indoor and outdoor sports facilities (e.g., basketball, soccer, tennis, gym)
– Creative arts spaces (e.g., music, dance, painting, crafts)
– Educational resources (e.g., library, computer lab, tutoring services)
– Counseling and mentoring services
– Community events and outreach programs
– Traditional sports like Ayo Ọlọpọn.

Benefits inherent in these centers are:

– Reduces drug addiction and social vices by providing a healthy outlet for energy and emotions.
– Fosters social connections, teamwork, and leadership skills.
– Enhances physical and mental health through regular exercise and creative expression.
– Promotes and develops budding talents into international/Olympic standards.
– Encourages community involvement and social responsibility.

The target audience:

– Youth (ages 10-25)
– Adults (ages 26-60)
– Seniors (ages 61+)
– Families and community groups

Locations:

– Urban and rural areas, with a focus on underserved communities.

The establishment of recreation centers across Kwara South, according to Senator Ashiru, offers a proactive approach to addressing drug addiction and social vices, providing a safe and supportive environment for individuals to grow, learn, and thrive. By offering diverse programs and services, we can empower our community members to make positive choices, build meaningful relationships, and contribute to a healthier and more vibrant society.
