The Nigerian Academy for Cultural Studies (NACUS) has announced the establishment of a new department, Cultural Pharmacology, to explore the potential of traditional medicinal herbs in promoting human health development.

The announcement was made by Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, Executive Secretary of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), at a forum on alternative medicine held at the Chinese Embassy in Abuja.

According to Ajiboye, the Cultural Pharmacology department will serve as a repository for Nigeria’s medicinal herbs and their potency, with the aim of promoting cultural pharmacology as a tool for development.

“The department will host all our medicinal herbs and their potency for human health development,” Ajiboye explained. “This initiative is part of our efforts to promote cultural pharmacology as a department of NACUS.”

The forum, which focused on the role of alternative medicine in health development, brought together experts from Nigeria and China to discuss ways of promoting traditional medicine as a complementary approach to modern healthcare.

Ajiboye’s announcement was seen as a significant step towards recognizing the importance of traditional medicine in Nigeria’s healthcare system and promoting cultural pharmacology as a vital tool for development.
