Offa Descendents Union Stands By Senator Ashiru, Says NDLEA’s Claims Lack Substantial Evidence

The Offa Descendants Union (ODU) wishes to formally address the timing and validity of the allegations put forth by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) against Senator Yissa Lola Ashiru, who represents the Kwara South senatorial district in the Nigerian Senate. In an effort to promote transparency and accountability, ODU is compelled to express its reservations regarding the credibility of these claims, which appear to lack substantial evidence and have been introduced under questionable circumstances. It is our expectation that the NDLEA conducts its investigations with the utmost integrity and transparency, in accordance with the public’s trust.

We would like to emphasize that the statements made by the NDLEA were made immediately after Senator Ashiru exercised his legislative privileges during a debate on a bill aimed at establishing the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation, wherein he criticized the agency as being “the most compromised agency”. The timing of these allegations raises concerns that they may have been deliberately orchestrated to undermine Senator Ashiru’s credibility and disrupt his active participation in crucial parliamentary discussions.

While stressing the importance of due process, ODU cautions against rushing to conclusions that could unfairly tarnish the reputation of individuals without a thorough examination of the facts. We express concerns that the NDLEA’s assertions may be motivated by political factors rather than being based on credible investigative findings. It is our stance that the circumstances surrounding these allegations should be subjected to meticulous and unbiased examination, ensuring a fair process that upholds the rights of all parties involved. We firmly assert that any claims related to drug-related activities must be supported by reliable evidence, rather than mere speculation or hearsay.

ODU affirms that Senator Ashiru is fully prepared to address any panel, summons, or trial that may arise, expressing his willingness to present his side of the story. We urge those who oppose him to refrain from engaging in smear campaigns and instead approach the situation with reason and impartiality.

In conclusion, ODU reiterates its commitment to supporting the Senate’s endeavors regarding this matter and extends its support to law enforcement initiatives aimed at combating drug trafficking and abuse. However, we insist that such efforts be carried out within the framework of justice and fairness. The union remains steadfast in its belief that every individual, including public officials like Senator Yissa Lola Ashiru, should be presumed innocent until proven guilty.
