Veteran Yoruba actor, Charles Sanyaolu, also known as Agbako, has passed away at the age of 101.
The Theatre Arts and Movie Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) president, Bolaji Amusan, shared the news on Instagram, stating, “TAMPAN Global announces the passing of Pa Charles Olumo Sanyaolu, fondly known as AGBAKO.” Amusan added that burial arrangements would be announced soon.
Born in 1923, Agbako was a pioneering figure in the Yoruba film industry, now part of Nollywood. Known for his captivating performances and powerful presence, he was often cast as formidable characters such as warriors, chiefs, and villains.
Agbako’s career spanned decades, during which he transitioned from traditional stage plays to film and television, becoming one of the most recognizable faces in Yoruba cinema.
His iconic roles in classics like Ogbori Elemosho and Atorunmo solidified his legacy as a celebrated actor and a true legend in the Yoruba film industry.
