Kenyan, Ethiopian Athletes Dominate 2025 Lagos City Marathon

East African runners once again asserted their dominance at the 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, clinching top honors in both the men’s and women’s categories.

Kenya’s Edwin Kibet claimed victory in the men’s race on Saturday, finishing with a time of 2:14:06 to secure the $50,000 prize. Kibet, who previously won the marathon in 2023, improved on his third-place finish from last year, where he trailed behind fellow Kenyans Bernard Sang and Alex Cheprot.

In the women’s category, Ethiopia’s Guta Meseret Hirpa emerged as the champion, clocking 2:37:04 to secure her first-ever win in the competition.

Nigerian athlete Nyango Gyang Boyi made history by finishing in the top 10, securing eighth place with a time of 2:25:41.58. His performance earned him a $4,000 prize, and as the first Nigerian to cross the finish line, he also won the N2 million prize in the local category.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also took part in the marathon, completing the race as thousands of runners competed for top honors.

The 42km course began at Western Avenue, near the National Stadium in Surulere, and concluded at Eko Atlantic City on Victoria Island. The annual event, which gained World Athletics Gold Label status in 2023, continues to grow in prominence, attracting elite athletes from across the globe.
