Edo Govt Takes Tough Stance on Kidnapping With Death Sentence Approval

The Edo State House of Assembly has passed the State Kidnapping Prohibition Law 2025, introducing a death sentence for offenders involved in kidnapping activities.

The motion, moved by Majority Leader Charity Aiguobarueghian and seconded by Minority Leader Henry Okaka, resulted in the amendment of the 2013 law, which previously stipulated life imprisonment for kidnapping offenders.

Under the new law, individuals convicted of kidnapping will face the death penalty, alongside the confiscation of property used in committing the crime.

In addition, the House passed a bill to repeal the Edo State Electricity Law 2022, establishing the Edo State Electricity Market, the Edo State Electricity Regulatory Commission, and the Edo Electrification Agency.

The Assembly also confirmed Mrs. Kenny Okojie as the chairperson of the governing board for the Edo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency.
