Former Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Kawu Modibo, has called for a comprehensive reform of Nigeria’s media regulatory framework.

Modibo, who spoke while hosting members of the Association of Kwara State Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP) to Ramadan Iftar at his country home, emphasized the need for a more effective and efficient regulatory system to promote high professional standards in the media industry.

He lamented the proliferation of “Award Journalism” and the decline in the quality of journalism, citing the need for a return to “Pure Journalism” where reporters focus on factual reporting without external influence or financial motivation.

The former NBC Boss criticized the media for not doing their job properly, citing the example of giving awards to governors without proper achievements, acknowledging that such acts creates a false impression that the governor has done exceptional work.

9japarot reports that Moddibo’s appeal comes at a time when Nigeria’s media landscape is grappling with issues of credibility, accountability and professionalism.

The former NBC Boss explained that a more effective and efficient regulatory framework is essential in promoting high professional standards, protecting the public interest, and safeguarding the rights of media practitioners.

He urged the Government to provide extra support to prevent discrimination and promote high professional standards.

On his part, ASKOMP Chairman and Founder of Informant247, Mr. Salihu Shola Taofeeq thanked Moddibo Kawu for sharing his experience and knowledge with the gathering acknowledging how impactful it will be in shaping the individual platforms.
