Lagos Announces Date For LG Elections

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has announced that local government elections will be held across the state on July 12, 2025.

Speaking in Lagos on Friday, Mr. Tope Ojo, Head of Public Affairs at LASIEC, disclosed that voters will elect chairpersons for 57 councils and councillors for 376 wards. He added that a re-run, if necessary, will be conducted a week later on July 19.

Lagos State is divided into 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), with a total of 376 wards.

Ojo explained that the election date was carefully selected to ensure continuity in governance and to prevent any leadership vacuum at the local level.

The electoral body has kickstarted preparations by issuing the official Notice of Election, which formally signals the start of the electoral process.

Political parties are expected to visit the LASIEC headquarters to collect nomination forms for their candidates. Ojo also noted that a meeting with registered political parties has been scheduled for Tuesday.

“The Election Guidelines will be published on April 17,” Ojo said.
He also outlined the timeline for campaigns and rallies, which will commence on April 18 and conclude on July 9.

Submission of Nomination Forms for substituted and sole candidates will take place from June 18 to June 25.

LASIEC Chairman, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd), emphasized the commission’s commitment to a transparent and inclusive process.
He stated that the commission would ensure a level playing field for all political parties and stakeholders.

“We are committed to conducting a free, fair, inclusive, and credible election,” he assured.

Okikiolu-Ighile also advised political parties and candidates to strictly adhere to the electoral timetable.
