Association of Nigerian Authors Condemns Persistent Attacks in Benue State

The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has issued a strong condemnation of the relentless attacks on innocent civilians in Benue State, particularly those attributed to suspected armed herdsmen. The association expressed its profound dismay at these “brutal assaults,” which have led to significant loss of life, widespread displacement of residents, and a pervasive sense of fear and insecurity within the affected communities.

In a statement released on Friday, jointly signed by the President, Usman Oladipo Akanbi Ph.D and General Secretary, Dame Joan Oji Ph.D, ANA declared its unequivocal condemnation in the strongest possible terms these odious acts of violence, which have targeted vulnerable populations, including women, children, and the elderly.

They highlighted that the frequency and ferocity of these attacks serve as a stark reminder of the pressing need for effective action to protect the lives and livelihoods of Nigerians.

The group urgently called upon both the state and federal governments to take immediate and decisive action to address the underlying causes of these attacks.

Furthermore, the association urged the governments at all levels to prioritize the safety and security of the generality of Nigerian citizens, particularly in rural communities, and to work towards finding a lasting solution to this crisis.

Reaffirming its commitment, ANA stated its solidarity with the people of Benue and other states experiencing similar turns of events and demand that the government take concrete steps to protect their lives and property.

“We pledged to continue to raise our voices against injustice and advocate for the rights and dignity of all Nigerians” the statement added.
