•••Calls for active participation of Nigerians in the Constitutional review process

Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar, who represents Kwara North Senatorial District and serves as a member of the Senate Committee on Constitutional Review representing the North Central geopolitical zone, is currently participating in the North Central Zonal Public Hearing on the Review of the 1999 Constitution. The two-day hearing, which commenced on July 4th, 2025, is holding in Jos, Plateau State.
The public hearing is a crucial part of a nationwide constitutional review exercise spearheaded by the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, under the leadership of the Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau. Similar proceedings are simultaneously taking place across Nigeria’s other geo-political zones.
Senator Sadiq’s active participation at the hearing underscores his unwavering commitment to deepening democratic governance, fostering inclusive development, and ensuring the voices of his constituents from Kwara North and the wider region are heard.
The review, which examines over 59 bills and 31 proposals, focuses on a range of critical national issues including:
Local Government Autonomy
State Creation and Restructuring
State Police
Judicial and Electoral Reforms
Inclusive Governance and Gender Representation
During the hearing, Senator Sadiq is actively also engaging with Stakeholders present across the region, lending his voice to calls for more inclusive leadership structures. The Kwara State delegation, of which he is a prominent part of have also used the public hearing platform to strongly advocate for increased participation of women in governance. The delegation called for new constitutional provisions that will legally mandate equitable representation for women at all levels of government, from local councils to federal executive positions.
