The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it has received a total of 129 applications from associations seeking registration as political parties in Nigeria.
This figure includes seven new applications received in the past week alone. All submitted requests are currently undergoing processing.
In a significant move to streamline and expedite the registration process, the Commission is introducing a new political party registration portal. This digital platform is a specialized module integrated into INEC’s existing Party Financial Reporting and Auditing System (PFRAS).
According to a statement issued on Thursday, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information & Voter Education Committee, Mr. Sam Olumekun mni, said the introduction of the portal will make the registration process “faster and seamless,” unlike the previous manual method.
Olumekun confirmed that the Commission will finalize the testing of the portal within the next week before its official deployment. Following this, INEC will announce the next steps for associations that meet the initial requirements to proceed to the formal application stage.
The Commission also plans to issue comprehensive guidelines to facilitate the accurate filing of applications using the new PFRAS portal.
Meanwhile, the list of the newly received associations has been uploaded to INEC’s official website and other public platforms for transparency and public information.
9japarrot report that the development signifies INEC’s ongoing commitment to leveraging technology to enhance the efficiency and transparency of its operations, including the crucial process of political party registration ahead of future elections.
