Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar, representing Kwara North and a member of the Senate Constitution Review Committee, delivered a compelling keynote at the 2025 NUJ Press Week, Kwara TV Chapel, held in Ilorin. Speaking on the theme “Pros and Cons of Ongoing Constitutional Review,” he emphasized the need for inclusive reforms, calling the constitution a “social contract” that must reflect citizens’ values and realities.

He highlighted critical areas such as gender and youth inclusion, devolution of powers, state policing, and local government autonomy urging that the process must be citizen-led and not restricted to political elites. He also warned of challenges such as political resistance, low civic awareness, and regional sensitivities.

Senator Umar applauded the NUJ Kwara TV Chapel for their commitment to public enlightenment and commended His Excellency, Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, CON (Executive Governor of Kwara State), for his consistent support to the media community in Kwara State.

He further emphasized the role of the media as both watchdog and nation-builder, encouraging journalists to demystify the constitutional process and drive public participation.

The NUJ Press Week Committee praised the Senator’s insightful delivery, describing it as a timely call to action for journalists and citizens alike to take ownership of Nigeria’s constitutional future.

The 2025 NUJ Press Week, Kwara TV Chapel, has become a launchpad for conversations around Nigeria’s democratic future. Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar’s intervention served as both a policy lecture and a call to action urging Nigerians to engage the constitutional review process not just as observers, but as architects of their own governance.

As the nation continues to navigate its constitutional reform efforts, stakeholders and citizens alike are reminded that lasting change will require bold ideas, open dialogue, and collective responsibility.
