Rejoinder to Dr. Thomas Adewumi’s Blanket Condemnation of Kwara South Senators

Our attention has been drawn to the publication titled “Political Representation of Kwara South Since 1999 is Weak” credited to Dr. Thomas Adewumi and published by Factual Times. While we hold Dr Adewumi in high esteem and acknowledge his right to express opinions on governance, it is important to set the records straight, especially where sweeping generalisations unfairly tarnish the image of dedicated public servants.

Dr. Adewumi’s blanket condemnation of all senators that have represented Kwara South since 1999 is inaccurate, unfair, and misleading. It is important to differentiate individual records of service rather than paint every senator with the same brush.

In this regard, Senator Oyelola Yisa Ashiru stands out distinctly. His representation has been anchored on clear electioneering promises, robust community development, and effective legislative engagement.

  1. Fulfilling Electioneering Promises
Senator Ashiru campaigned on the pledge of responsive and people-focused leadership. Since assuming office, he has consistently engaged constituents through town hall meetings, project updates, and an open-door policy.
  2. Community Development
The Senator has facilitated numerous constituency projects including rural electrification, water boreholes, renovation of schools and health centres, as well as scholarship and empowerment programmes that have positively impacted thousands of households across Kwara South.
  3. Effective Representation at the National Assembly
Beyond physical projects, Senator Ashiru has been active on the floor of the Senate, sponsoring and supporting bills, contributing meaningfully to debates, and using his platform to advocate for the peculiar needs of Kwara South. His participation in committees and oversight roles has equally ensured that the voice of the district is heard at the federal level.

We do not deny that challenges remain in meeting the vast developmental needs of Kwara South. However, to dismiss every senator since 1999 as a failure is to ignore tangible contributions, especially those of Senator Ashiru, whose record clearly speaks to commitment, delivery, and accountability.

We, therefore, urge commentators, analysts, and the general public to adopt a balanced perspective by recognising both the gaps and the achievements. Constructive criticism is welcome, but it must be grounded in facts and fairness.
