Sports Analyst Hails Senator Orji Kalu as African Pillar for Back-to-Back CAF Triumphs

By Saeed Tijjani

The enduring football legacy of former Abia State Governor and Senator representing Abia North Senatorial district, Orji Uzor Kalu (OUK) has been highlighted by prominent sports administrator and historian, Ejikeme Ikwunze, who described him as an African pillar of sports.

Ikwunze’s reflection focused on Senator Kalu’s remarkable achievements during his tenure as Abia State Governor (1999–2007), specifically his leadership that propelled Enyimba International Football Club to historic continental glory.

The sports expert praised the lawmaker’s vision and investment, which culminated in Enyimba FC winning the prestigious CAF Champions League back-to-back in 2003 and 2004. These victories ended Nigeria’s long-standing jinx in the premier African club competition and cemented Enyimba’s and by extension, Abia State’s position as a dominant force in Nigerian and African football.

9japarrot media reports that the tenure of Senator Kalu as Governor was widely regarded as Enyimba’s golden era, where the club was transformed from one struggling for survival to an African powerhouse, winning multiple domestic and continental titles, including two CAF Super Cups (2004 and 2005).

Ikwunze’s message highlighted the lasting impact of Kalu’s political leadership on Nigerian sports development, noting that his commitment to football earned him the title of Pillar of Sports in Africa following the initial honour bestowed upon late Chief M.K.O. Abiola.
