Senator Orji Uzor Kalu emerged as a central figure at Tuesday’s Senate plenary, steering key decisions on national security while advancing legislative oversight on child protection and education.
During the session, the Senate approved President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s request for the deployment of Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin on a peace support mission. Senator Kalu described the plenary as productive and impactful, noting that the decision reflects Nigeria’s constitutional responsibilities and its continued leadership in promoting peace and stability across the West African sub-region.
Beyond the security resolution, Senator Kalu, in his capacity as Chairman of the Senate Ad-hoc Committee investigating the Safe Schools Initiative (SSI), chaired a crucial committee sitting that drew significant attention.
The committee received a detailed briefing from the National Coordinator, Financing Safe Schools, Hajiya Halima Iliya Ibrahim, who provided a comprehensive account of funds allocated to the initiative since its launch in 2014.
Senator Kalu emphasized that the committee’s work is focused on strengthening transparency and accountability while ensuring that resources meant to protect schools and students are effectively utilised.
He reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to safeguarding Nigerian children, particularly those in communities affected by insecurity.
The lawmaker also joined colleagues in celebrating leadership within the National Assembly, extending heartfelt birthday felicitations to the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and Senator Agom Jarigbe.
Senator Kalu prayed for God’s grace, wisdom, and renewed strength for the celebrants as they continued to serve the nation.
