The Senate on Wednesday took a step toward strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture as a bill sponsored by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu seeking an amendment to the Armed Forces Act passed First Reading.

Kalu, who participated fully in the plenary, said the proposed amendment reflects the Senate’s commitment to enhancing national security and improving the operational framework of the armed forces.

Beyond the plenary, the former Senate Chief Whip continued presiding over the Senate Ad-hoc Investigative Committee on the Safe School Initiative.

On Wednesday, the committee received officials from the Federal Ministry of Education and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), who briefed lawmakers on their interventions, roles, and utilisation of funds allocated to securing schools across the country.

Kalu said the investigation aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the implementation of the Safe School Initiative, stressing that every Nigerian child deserves a safe learning environment.

“Our commitment is clear, every Nigerian child deserves a safe learning environment, and we will ensure transparency and accountability in the Safe School Initiative,” Senator Orji Kalu said.
