Senator Saliu Mustapha’s Homecoming: An Exposition of Humility and Leadership By Example

By Abdullateef Ishowo

In a poignant display of humility and cultural reverence, Senator Saliu Mustapha’s homecoming to his ancestral hometown, a place steeped in rich Islamic tradition and history,  thickened the air with anticipation as the man of considerable influence and stature made his way through the narrow, winding streets of the ancient city. His presence, a stark contrast to the modern, bustling world he often inhabits.

As he entered the town around 4pm on Thursday 11th December 2025,
a sense of calm and serenity washed over him, a feeling that was palpative to all who accompanied him. Turaki ngeri, a custodian of culture and Islamic tradition himself, in eager to reconnect with his roots and pay homage to the traditions that had shaped him, the humble son of the soil, who’s aura reflects a conscientious man with awareness of Allah’s mighty stare over His creatures, his first stop was an Islamic center in Ilorin where he joined other dignitaries to celebrate the 45 years of impactful Dawah of Sheikh Umar Farooq (Sohibul-Bayan), a highly respected Islamic scholar and preacher whose knowledge, guidance and commitment have shaped lives across generations. He congratulated him for  this remarkable milestone and pray that Almighty Allah continues to strengthen him.

The following day being Friday 12th December 2025, the Turaki ngeri paid the reverred Emir of Ilorin a courtesy visit around 1pm before proceeding to observe the mandatory two-rakat Jumah prayer at the Ilorin Central Mosque. Like a loving father, whose unflinching desire is to consistently see his children excelling, Maimartaba beamed at the sight of one of the most distinguished ambassadors of the city; welcoming him heartily and physically. The aura that radiated his gesture towards the performing senator, whose main focus is human capital development, was a testimony. The senator did not leave the magnificent palace without offering prayers to Almighty Allah, seeking elongation of Emir’s existence in sound health. Subsequently, he paid a condolence visit to one of the great custodians of Ilorin tradition, the Seriki n Salama of Ilorin, Alhaji Ayuba Gambari, over the passing of his daughter, Barrister Balikis Ayuba. He commiserated with the family and prayed that Allah forgives and grants her Al-Jannatu Firdaus.

At the central mosque, he entered so quietly that the congregation hardly noticed his arrival, until handlers of the mic exposed the goldfish that has no hidden place. Like a pious man that he is, he tiptoed to an unreserved space and quickly had two-rakat nafla before gently sitting down to listen to the Jumat khutbah offered by the eminently eloquent Chief Imam of Ilorin, Sheikh (Dr) Muhammad Bashir Saliu, OON.

After the solat, the affable but principled senator proceeded to inspect the effectiveness of the multi-million naira solar-powered mini-grid system earlier facilitated to the central mosque, an edifice symbolising the unity of Ilorin city. There, the Chief Imam prayed profusely for him, wishing him all the best he desires.

From the mosque, he proceeded to visiting some esteemed elders of Ilorin and his immediate community, each a repository of history and tradition. One by one, they welcomed him with open arms, sharing stories and values that had been passed down through generations. The senator listened intently, his eyes shining with respect and gratitude, as he absorbed the wisdom and counsel of these venerable men.

As the day wore on, the senator made his way to his constituency office, where a throng of party members, followers and well-wishers had gathered to catch a glimpse of him. With a warm smile, he greeted the crowd, shaking hands and exchanging words of encouragement. His message was simple: unity, peace, and progress. He spoke of the need for collective effort to uplift the state to its eldorado,  bridge the gaps that divide us and forge a brighter future for all.

As he prepared to leave, the senator’s eyes misted over, not with sadness, but with a deep sense of connection. He had come home, and in doing so, had reminded himself of the values that truly mattered. The people, the traditions, and the faith that had shaped him. As he departed, the echoes of prayers and blessings followed him, a testament to the enduring impact of his visit. His followers, left in awe, knew that they had witnessed something special – a leader who embodied the virtues of humility, compassion, and service. Thanks for making us proud Sir.
