The Senator representing Abia North, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has expressed deep concern over the rising cases of killings, banditry and terrorism across Nigeria, warning that the country is being destroyed from within by its own people.
The former Abia State governor voiced his frustration in a message shared on his social media handle on Thursday, lamenting what he described as a worsening security situation nationwide.
According to Kalu, Nigerians must take collective responsibility for the violence ravaging the country, stressing that citizens are not being attacked by outsiders but by fellow Nigerians.
“We are not doing it to anybody, we are just doing it to ourselves. We should stand up and stop the bandits, the terrorists and everybody who start killing us. Let Nigeria stand up”, Senator Kalu said.
The senator described kidnapping and violent crimes as unacceptable and questioned why such acts have become so widespread.
“It’s our duty to stand up and stop this kidnapping. I don’t know why it should be happening. I don’t know why,” he said.
Kalu called on Nigerians to think and act responsibly, urging communities to cooperate with security agencies and traditional leaders to confront criminal elements head-on.
“Please, let’s think like civilized people and work together with our security agencies, with our community leaders and stop the people because it’s just Nigerians killing themselves,” he said.
He also criticised the tendency to blame foreigners for insecurity, insisting that Nigerians must face the reality of internal violence.
“They are blaming people from Senegal, people from Mali, people from far and near. Why? We are the ones killing ourselves,” Kalu stated.
Highlighting the nationwide spread of violence, the lawmaker noted that no region has been spared.
“In the North-East we are killing ourselves. In the North-West we are killing ourselves. In the North-Central we are killing ourselves. In the South-South we are killing ourselves. In the South-East we are killing ourselves. In the South-West we are killing ourselves,” he said.
Kalu further decried what he described as the extreme moral decay driving violent crimes, including the trafficking of human parts for money.
“What will we gain? People are selling all kinds of parts, human parts, to make money. Oh my God, we must repent from this anomaly,” he said.
He passionately appeal for national reflection and repentance, calling on Nigerians to put an end to the bloodshed threatening the country’s unity and future.
