A businessman and community leader, Chief Obinna Nshirim, has said there is no basis for comparing Senator Orji Uzor Kalu with Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, describing Kalu as a political colossus whose record speaks for itself.
Nshirim made this statement while reacting to recent remarks by Governor Otti, which attempted to play down Senator Kalu’s political relevance. He said such comments show a lack of understanding of political history and how power is built and sustained in Abia State and Nigeria at large.
According to him, Senator Kalu’s political journey is one that cannot be dismissed with press statements. He recalled how Kalu faced serious political pressure during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo but refused to give in. “Orji Uzor Kalu faced power head-on and stood his ground,” Nshirim said, noting that many politicians would not have survived such isolation.
He added that Kalu went further to form a political party from scratch, the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), and used it to produce two governors in Imo and Abia states, as well as three senators. “That achievement alone puts him in a different class,” Nshirim stated.
Nshirim stressed that political weight is built over time through sacrifice, structure, and deep connection with the people, not through media attacks or noise. “This is why there is no basis for comparing Senator Orji Uzor Kalu with Governor Otti,” he said. “Political stature is earned, not claimed.”
He warned against politics of bitterness and personal insults, advising Governor Otti’s aides to focus on governance and service to the people rather than attacking political opponents. He said respect for experience and institutions is necessary for peace and stability in Abia State.
Nshirim concluded by urging the current administration to show humility and embrace inclusive leadership, reminding them that power does not last forever, but legacies do. “History is watching everyone,” he said.
