As part of his office effort in addressing critical welfare and security challenges confronting students on campus in the state, the Welfare Director for National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Kwara State axis, Comrade Muh’d Jamiu Abdulsalam, has approved the appointment of five experts and stakeholders to lead the Local Organising Committee for the upcoming maiden summit.
In a statement issued by the NANS Welfare Director on Monday in Ilorin, Abdulsalam disclosed that the maiden summit tagged ‘Kwara NANS Students’ Welfare and Security Summit 2026’, is conceived as a proactive step to engage the Kwara State Government, tertiary institution authorities, security agencies, and private sector stakeholders on how best to advance a safe, secure, and student-friendly educational environment in the state.
Abdulsalam added that upcoming maiden summit themed, ‘Empowering Minds, Securing Futures: A New Dawn for Kwara Students’ Welfare and Protection’ would also served as an forum to discuss security issues affecting students within and outside campuses in Kwara state, with an emphasis on prevention and intervention from the security and government agencies.
The statement announced the appointment of former KWASU ex-Senate President, Comrade AbdulHameed Abimbola (Hamkel) to serve as the Chairman, Local Organizing Committee (LOC); while Comrade Joseph Oketokun (JB) has been appointed as the Vice-chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the maiden summit.
The appointment also include a young Public Relations expert, Mr. Abdulwaheed Sulaiman popularly called ‘Kwara Aiyekooto’ who has been named as Chairman, Media and Publicity Committee, while Protocol Officer to incumbent KWASU Students’ Union President, Comrade Idris Mubarak (Mubby) is to serve as the Chairman, Venue and Protocol Committee.
Other appointees include Comrade Alli AbdulMujeeb (Alibaba), Special Assistant on Media to KWASU Students’ Union President, who is appointed to chair the Accreditation and Entertainment committee for the maiden summit.
The statement stressed that the five experts and stakeholders are to nominate capable hands to work closely with them as members of various committees for the upcoming summit, adding that the appointees are expected to give the required support and attention that the summit needed to succeed.
According to Abdulsalam, his administration is unrelenting in addressing the students’ welfare and security challenges on Kwara campuses, adding that the convergence would bring together key stakeholders, policymakers, civil society organizations, and student leaders under one roof for strategic engagement and policy dialogue.
“The summit is designed as a one-day high-level engagement on issues ranging from safety and mental health, security approach threatening the university community, to socio-economic hardship, featuring keynote addresses, expert panel sessions, policy presentations, and a student-led welfare resolution,” he said.
The statement further disclosed that the summit aims to “provide a formal platform for dialogue between students and stakeholders on welfare-related challenges and opportunities.”
Additionally, the summit would foster partnerships with government, Non-governmental Organisations, and private entities toward sustainable welfare solutions.
It would also serve as a forum to recognize individuals and institutions that have made outstanding contributions to student welfare.
The NANS Kwara welfare director, meanwhile, called on well-meaning Kwarans to support the upcoming NANS Kwara Students Welfare and Security Summit 2026, to further strengthen the apex body representing the collective interests of students across all tertiary institutions in the state.
