Five Die, Eight Hospitalized after Allegedly Consuming Poisonous Meat in Taraba

The Taraba State Police Command, on Wednesday, confirmed the death of five persons following the consumption of meat allegedly laced with poison in Takum local government council of the state.

The tragic incident, which occurred on Tuesday, reportedly left eight other persons hospitalised and currently receiving medical treatment.

According to a statement issued by the Command’s Acting Police Public Relations Officer, Victor Mshelizah, preliminary findings suggest that the victims consumed meat suspected to have been contaminated with a toxic substance intended for rodent control.

Police said officers were immediately deployed to the area upon receiving the report. The affected individuals were rushed to nearby medical facilities, while the deceased were taken for necessary procedures.

The Command disclosed that a comprehensive investigation has commenced to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

Authorities urged members of the public to promptly report any suspicious food items, sudden illnesses, or related occurrences to the nearest police station or appropriate authorities to prevent further loss of life.

The Police assured residents that efforts are underway to uncover the truth behind the incident and pledged that anyone found responsible will be brought to justice.
