In recent weeks, social media platforms have become battlegrounds for heated exchanges between supporters of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and the opposition camp, especially the Abia-faction of the Labour Party. If you take a critical and objective look at these intense and frequent online altercations, one thing will be significant: the Abia Governor’s team appears to be increasingly worried about Senator Kalu’s growing political influence in the state. The sustained attacks on OUK’s person is a clear indication that Otti’s camp views the senator not just as a political rival but as a genuine threat capable of unseating the current government in the state.
The anxiety in the opponent’s camp becomes more understandable when you consider Senator Kalu’s recent political achievements, particularly his success in uniting the Abia State All Progressives Congress (APC). The perceived fragmentations in Abia APC had given dissenting voices joy with secret prayers for a deeper problem in the party but Senator Kalu’s ability to bring these various groups together under one umbrella has created a formidable political machinery that poses a serious challenge to Abia-faction Labour Party administration. A united APC in Abia, led by a politician of Senator Kalu’s stature with overwhelming grassroots appeal, represents the kind of opposition that keeps incumbent governments awake over night.
In Abia State, there are many heavyweight politicians at both national and state levels. But Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has remained in open discussion more than any politician from the state. The current Otti administration has continued to launch media attacks on both the person of Orji Uzor Kalu and his political aspirations, a clear sign of feeling threatened by his influence.
The pattern of dragging Senator Kalu into unrelated controversies extends beyond state politics, though sponsored by state elements. During the recent Electoral Act amendment debate about electronic transmission of results, the conversation somehow unexpectedly shifted from the actual accused parties to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, with oppositions digging up a statement he made over five years ago. Whilst the main accusation was on the Senate President for allegedly altering the bill, surprisingly, Kalu’s name became the centre of heated discussion from nowhere.
The common question would be “why?” and the reason is not far-fetched. When you see people going out of their ways to drag someone into controversies they have nothing to do with, it tells you everything about how much influence that person wields. Senator Kalu, the senator representing Abia North, was not involved in the alleged document alteration, but his opponents needed a familiar face to rally sympathies. They needed someone whose name alone could generate the kind of attention their cause was lacking. That speaks volumes about OUK’s political stature.
The attacks have continued to spring up in different forms and angles. We are aware when political players unleashed their supporters to launch coordinated open attacks against the senator by sponsoring fake protests against him in Ohafia with attempts to make it a media outing. However, their plans backfired spectacularly when the highest traditional body of Ohafia, the Ohafia Council of Ndi Eze, not only disowned those involved but also sanctioned them with heavy fines. The traditional institution saw through the charade and refused to allow their respected community to be used as a tool for cheap political point-scoring.
Another question will be why would anyone invest resources in organising fake protests against a politician if that politician does not pose a serious threat to their ambitions? The restlessness is palpable. These orchestrated attacks reveal a deep-seated fear of what Senator Kalu represents: genuine grassroots support born out of laudable traceable community projects, and proven political machinery.
The truth is that people who are secure in their political positions do not waste time and resources attacking others unprovoked. They focus on delivering good governance and building their own legacies. But when you see frantic efforts to diminish someone’s reputation through manufactured controversies, fake grassroots movements, and relentless online attacks, you are witnessing political insecurity at its peak. If Governor Otti’s administration were confident in its grab on the state and certain of its prospects for re-election, why would it be so preoccupied with Senator Kalu’s activities?
Senator Kalu’s influence is not built on propaganda or media hype. It is rooted in decades of constituency service, strategic political positioning, and genuine relationships with his people. His ability to reunite the APC in Abia State demonstrates political skill and leadership that cannot be matched by social media attacks or sponsored protests. That kind of influence cannot be wished away with fake protests or online campaigns. It is built on tangible achievements, strategic vision, and the trust of ordinary Abians who remember what effective leadership looks like.
