On Thursday, September 10, 2026, The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, inaugurated a State of the Year Art ICT Experience Centre, a Students’ Examination Hall, and a Chemical Engineering Complex at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko.
The projects, funded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), were described as a major boost to technical education in the South-East.
Federal Polytechnic Oko is the only institution in the zone selected to host the TETFund ICT Experience Centre among the six geopolitical regions of the country.
Speaking at the event, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr Chioma Irene Awuzie, said the commissioning marked “a new chapter” for the institution. She noted that the ICT Centre would equip students with digital skills needed to compete in a technology-driven economy.
“This is an investment in human capital and the future of Nigerian youth,” Dr Awuzie said. “It places our graduates at an advantage in the labour market.”
She attributed the recent infrastructural growth to strategic engagement with TETFund and other federal agencies, citing achievements such as the xx of the water factory, bakery, and campus radio 98.7 Moment FM, construction of a medical centre at Ufuma campus, establishment of a Skill Development Centre, security upgrades, and reduction of school fees.
Also speaking, Dr Onyeka Uwakwe, JP, Chief Lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication, commended the Federal Government and TETFund for the intervention.
Dr Awuzie also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for implementing the Renewed Hope Agenda in education, and applauded the Minister of Education, Dr Olatunji Alausa, and TETFund Executive Secretary, Arc. Dr Sonny Echono, for their support.
She, however, appealed to the Federal Government for intervention in erosion control in Oko and surrounding communities.
The Governing Council, led by Senator Barnabas Gemade, was also praised for providing result-oriented leadership.
