Zulum Links ISWAP Attacks to Halt in Military Operations Around Lake Chad

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has linked renewed attacks by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on military formations and civilian communities in northern Borno to the reported suspension of military operations around the shores of Lake Chad.

Zulum made the observation on Wednesday while receiving the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, who visited him after an operational tour of the Command and Control Centre of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) in the North-East.

The governor’s remarks came amid renewed security concerns following attacks on military bases and civilian populations in parts of Borno State.

ISWAP terrorists reportedly attacked a military base in Mairari, Guzaumala Local Government Area, on Tuesday, killing more than 10 soldiers and four civilians. The attack also resulted in the destruction of operational equipment and vehicles.

Zulum commended Shaibu for his contributions to the operations of troops under Operation Hadin Kai since assuming office, expressing hope that ongoing efforts would further strengthen security and restore lasting peace in the state.

The governor also sympathised with the army chief over the deaths of soldiers in recent attacks and prayed for the repose of their souls, as well as the strength of their families to bear the loss.

“Under your leadership, Borno State has recorded some stability in the areas of peace. We adore you for your efforts,” Zulum said.

The reported link between the attacks and the halt in operations around Lake Chad highlights concerns over the security situation in northern Borno and the need for sustained military action to protect troops and civilian communities.
