The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, has warned that individuals who attack, intimidate or threaten National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and other election officials during the 2027 general elections will face the full consequences of the law.
Amupitan gave the warning on Saturday, October 31, 2026, during the South-South Zonal Interactive Meeting with Staff and Readiness Assessment held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
INEC disclosed this in a statement published on its official X account on Sunday.
The INEC chairman stressed the need to guarantee the safety and security of personnel deployed for election duties, particularly NYSC members who play significant roles in the conduct of elections across the country.
He warned that any attempt to harass, assault or intimidate electoral officials would not be tolerated, noting that perpetrators would be held accountable in accordance with the law.
The warning comes as the electoral commission intensifies preparations for the 2027 general elections, with emphasis on staff readiness, security arrangements and the protection of personnel involved in the electoral process.
INEC reiterated the importance of a peaceful and secure environment to ensure credible elections and urged political actors, supporters and members of the public to respect electoral officials and allow them to perform their duties without intimidation.
