The Nigeria Debate Consortium has scheduled the Lagos State governorship debate for Sunday, November 8, 2026, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The debate, which marks the beginning of a series of planned electoral engagements across selected battleground states, will hold at 7:00 p.m. at The Hub by IALA, House of His Glory, Plot 18, Providence Road, Marwa, Lekki, Lagos.

According to a statement titled ‘Lagos 2026: Nigeria Debate Consortium Sets November 8 for Governorship Debate’, the event is expected to bring together governorship candidates from different political parties to present their policy agendas, defend their positions and address critical issues affecting residents of the state.

The debate will focus on key areas of governance, including transportation, infrastructure, security, housing, education, healthcare, job creation and economic growth.

The Nigeria Debate Consortium, comprising Channels Television, TVC News, PUNCH Newspaper, TheCable and Vanguard Newspaper, said the initiative was designed to promote democratic participation, electoral accountability and informed public discourse through credible and non-partisan electoral engagements.

The consortium explained that the debate would provide voters with an opportunity to assess the candidates’ ideas, priorities and preparedness to govern Lagos State beyond campaign promises.

It added that all participating candidates would be given equal opportunities under the same rules, speaking times and moderation standards, guided by principles of fairness, neutrality and editorial independence.

The debate will be moderated by experienced journalists and broadcast to national and digital audiences through the participating media organisations’ platforms.

Meanwhile, some of the leading contenders in the 2027 Lagos governorship race have outlined their policy priorities.

The Lagos State Deputy Governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Obafemi Hamzat, has highlighted plans to strengthen infrastructure, improve security through state policing, address flooding, tackle housing challenges and improve waste management.

Similarly, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has promised to prioritise affordable housing and establish mechanisms for residents to report alleged intimidation by security operatives and political thugs.

Also, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate, Funso Doherty, has pledged to make education and healthcare accessible at no cost within his first 100 days in office if elected in 2027.

The consortium called on Lagos residents, eligible voters, young people, civil society organisations, professional associations and members of the business community to participate in the electoral engagement.

The Lagos debate is expected to provide a platform for issue-based discussions and enable voters to scrutinise the candidates’ proposed policies, leadership priorities and plans for the future of the state.
