The Federal Fire Service has raised concerns over the growing risks of preventable fire outbreaks, identifying faulty electrical installations, careless handling of cooking appliances, improper storage of combustible materials and unattended open flames as major causes of fire incidents in communities.
The warning was issued by the Controller of the Federal Fire Service, Taraba State Command, Yakubu Samson Dungus, on Monday during the flag-off of the 2026 National Fire Safety Week at the Taraba State Fire Service Headquarters in Jalingo.
The event, themed “Building a Fire Resilient Nigeria: One Community at a Time,” emphasised the need for collective responsibility and proactive safety measures to prevent fire disasters across the country.
Speaking at the event, Dungus stressed that fire prevention should not be left solely to emergency responders, noting that individuals, families, businesses, institutions and government agencies all have important roles to play in reducing fire risks.
“Fire prevention should not be left to emergency responders alone, but requires the active participation of government, businesses, institutions, families and individuals,” he said.
He called for increased public awareness, the adoption of early fire detection systems and responsible safety practices in homes, workplaces and public spaces to minimise fire incidents.
Also speaking, the Taraba State Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives, property and the environment through sustained public enlightenment, collaboration and preventive strategies.
Representing the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Gebon T. Kataps, the Acting Secretary of Home Affairs and Special Services, Mrs Christy Iliya, said the administration remained committed to strengthening fire safety measures across the state.
She commended the Federal Fire Service and the Taraba State Fire Service for their continued efforts towards protecting lives and property.
Similarly, the General Officer Commanding, 10 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Nnebeife, represented by Major Oyom, Acting Commanding Officer of the 10 Division Transport Battalion, applauded the two fire services for their commitment to public safety.
Other speakers at the event also pledged support for fire safety initiatives, emphasising the importance of institutional collaboration, public participation and collective action in building safer and more fire-resilient communities across Taraba State.
The 2026 National Fire Safety Week is expected to strengthen public understanding of fire prevention and encourage communities to adopt practical safety measures to reduce avoidable fire disasters.
