Renowned neurosurgeon, Prof. Wale Sulaiman MD, PhD, CON has charged medical graduates to be innovative, collaborate, and give back to their communities.
Prof. Sulaiman made this call at the University of Ilorin’s 39th Professional Initiation Admission Ceremony for Batch A, Class of 2022 medical graduands.
The colorful gathering held at the University Auditorium was filled to the brim as graduands, University community, parents, stakeholders gathered to take a glance of the World-class renowned neurosurgeon, Prof. Wale Sulaiman MD, PhD, FRSC (C), CON as he delivers his Keynote address.
According to him, Nigeria’s medical education is heavily subsidized, and graduates must reciprocate by contributing meaningfully to the healthcare sector.
“Nigeria’s medical education is heavily subsidized; nowhere in the world has subsidized education in medical school as it is in Nigeria. You must give back to society through non-profit-driven activities,” Prof. Sulaiman said.
He also addressed the “japa syndrome,” urging graduates to shun brain drain and uphold the ethics of their profession.
University of Ilorin Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, congratulated the graduands, saying,
“Today marks a significant milestone in your journey as medical professionals. Uphold the ethics of your profession and make a positive impact.”
College of Health Sciences Provost, Prof. Sulyman Alabi, emphasized continuous learning and professional development.
The ceremony also featured an award presentation to Dr. Zainab Yakubu, the best graduating medical student.
Prof. Sulaiman gifted Dr. Yakubu a N500,000 cash reward for her outstanding performance in winning in no fewer than 12 categories of different awards, promising to continue supporting her in pursuit of global excellence in the medical field.
“In recognition of her exceptional achievement, I present this cash reward to Dr. Yakubu, and I commit to supporting her future endeavors,” Prof. Sulaiman said.
In a gesture of appreciation, the University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Egbewole, presented Prof. Sulaiman with an Award of Participation for his contributions to the University’s College of Health Sciences.
