Insecurity: Arrest Vehicles With No Plate Number, Lagos Orders Security Agents

By Nurat Uthman

The Lagos State Government has instructed law enforcement agencies to arrest motorists who have defective vehicle registration plates or no number plates at all.

The government is calling on motorists to avoid this illegal behavior to prevent prosecution, as it goes against sections 15 and 16 of the State’s Transport Reform Law 2018.

Engr. Abdulhafiz Toriola, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, made these statements over the weekend. Toriola explained that the misuse of number plates, such as covering them without authorization, using faded or damaged plates, misusing them, or not using them at all, is a violation of the law, especially considering the current security challenges facing the country.

Toriola emphasized the importance of properly registering vehicles with number plates, as a vehicle without a number plate can be used for criminal activities that may never be traced.

He advised motorists to use water and non-chemical cleaners to wash their number plates and prevent damage or fading.

Toriola also mentioned that using private number plates for commercial vehicles or other purposes is against the Transport Reform Law.

For individuals who are currently unwilling to register their vehicles, Toriola suggested contacting the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA) of the State to obtain a Temporary Vehicle Tag (TVT) in accordance with section 193 of the Transport Reform Law 2018, until a final decision on permanent registration is made.

Toriola stated that law enforcement agencies have been instructed to apprehend offenders, and he urged vehicle owners to comply with the State Government to enhance the existing security measures.
