The Northern Elite Movement has sounded a warning bell for President Bola Tinubu, cautioning that a plot by Mr. Kayode Oyetola’s cabal to undermine the reappointment of a Northerner as the Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC) could jeopardize his second-term ambitions.
In a statement released through the President, Dr Abubakar, the Northern Elite Movement emphasized that appointing another Southerner to this position, despite the existing balance with the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) led by Southerners, would send a wrong message to the North and disrupt the delicate regional balance.
This move would likely be perceived as a deliberate attempt to marginalize the North, potentially harming President Tinubu’s chances of securing Northern support for his second-term bid.
The group urged President Tinubu to prioritize regional balance and fairness in appointments, reappointing a Northerner as FCC Chairman to demonstrate his commitment to national unity and ensure that the North feels represented in his administration.
This move would also send a positive signal to Northern leaders and voters, potentially bolstering his chances of securing their support for his second-term bid.
The Northern Elite Movement cautioned that ignoring the need for regional balance and fairness would have far-reaching consequences, potentially alienating Northern leaders and voters and making it challenging for President Tinubu to secure their support in the next election.
“We urge President Tinubu to ignore Oyetola’s divisive plans and make decisions that promote national unity and stability,” the statement read.
“The stakes are high, and the consequences of getting it wrong could be severe.”
The Northern Elite Movement’s caution highlights the importance of regional balance and fairness in appointments, and President Tinubu would do well to take note.
Signed
Dr. Abubakar Aminu
President, Northern Elite Movement
