Senator Orji Kalu Mourns Professor Joy Ogwu

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, MON, representing Abia North Senatorial district, has extended his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Nigerian diplomat and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Professor Joy Uche Angela Ogwu.

Professor Ogwu, who died on October 13, 2025, at the age of 79, was lauded by Senator Kalu as an eminent Nigerian, an outstanding African diplomat and a global voice for peace and progress.

In a terse statement made available to 9japarrot media on Saturday, the lawmaker praised Professor Ogwu’s exceptional career, which saw her serve as Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs (2006–2007) and the nation’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (2008–2017).

Professor Ogwu’s life was marked by stellar service, intellectual brilliance and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s role in the world,” the statement reads.

“As Minister of Foreign Affairs and as one of Africa’s most respected diplomats, she brought dignity, strategic vision and moral clarity to our international engagements.” the statement added.

Senator Kalu stressed that her departure leaves a void that will be keenly felt across Nigeria, the African continent, and the entire diplomatic community.

“On behalf of the people of Abia North senatorial district and my family, I extend my heartfelt sympathy and solidarity to the immediate family of the deceased” He said.

Senator Kalu prayed that Almighty God would rest the deceased’s soul in perfect peace and grant her loved ones the fortitude to endure the irreparable loss.

Nigeria mourns a daughter, Africa mourns a champion, the world mourns a statesperson. Her legacy will forever shine, He concluded.
