The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has issued a strong caution to Point-of-Sale operators nationwide, announcing that it will soon begin a coordinated enforcement action against businesses that have failed to complete mandatory registration.
In a statement released on its Instagram page on Saturday, the Commission said it has noticed a growing number of PoS service providers operating without being officially registered.
The commission had previously signalled plans for a crackdown on PoS agents in 2024, a proposal that drew resistance from operators at the time.
According to the latest update, the CAC described the surge in unregistered PoS businesses as a breach of the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 and a disregard for the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Agent Banking Regulations.
It further accused certain fintech firms of contributing to the problem by onboarding agents who lack proper registration — a move the commission labelled as reckless and a threat to the stability of the financial system. The CAC cautioned that such practices expose millions of Nigerians, especially small businesses and rural users, to financial and investment vulnerabilities.
The agency reiterated that from 1 January 2026, every PoS operator must have completed CAC registration to remain in business.
“Effective 1 January 2026, no PoS operator will be allowed to operate without CAC registration. Security agencies will enforce nationwide compliance. Unregistered PoS terminals will be seized or shut down by security officials.Fintechs enabling illegal operations will be placed on the watchlist and reported to the CBN. All operators are advised to regularise immediately. Compliance is mandatory,” the statement read.
