Disquiet in Kwara as Central Stakeholders Back Ibiwoye’s Governorship Ambition

Emerging political alignments in Kwara State have begun to stir tension across party lines following reports that key stakeholders in Kwara Central have thrown their weight behind the governorship ambition of Olasheni Ibiwoye ahead of the 2027 elections.

Ibiwoye, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has in recent months intensified consultations and grassroots engagement across the state, positioning himself as a formidable contender in the race.

Sources within the party indicate that the latest endorsement reportedly framed as a “working bond” among influential figures in Kwara Central—signals a strategic consolidation of support in the state’s most politically pivotal senatorial district. Though details of the arrangement remain sketchy, insiders suggest it reflects a coordinated effort to unify blocs within the region behind a single aspirant.

The development, however, has not gone unnoticed. Political observers say the move may be contributing to growing unease among other aspirants and stakeholders, particularly in the context of Kwara’s delicate zoning considerations and long-standing power-sharing dynamics among the three senatorial districts.

“The Central district holds significant electoral advantage, so any early alignment of this nature is bound to generate reactions,” a political analyst in Ilorin noted. “It raises questions about inclusivity and the broader balance of interests within the party.”

Ibiwoye’s campaign, anchored on a reform-driven agenda focusing on security, economic revitalization, and youth empowerment, has continued to attract attention across various parts of the state. Support groups in Kwara South and Kwara North have also been linked to his growing political network, further reinforcing perceptions of a widening support base.

Despite the momentum, party insiders caution that the race remains open, with multiple aspirants expected to jostle for the PDP ticket. They also emphasize that endorsements at this stage, while significant, do not necessarily determine the outcome of party primaries.

Efforts to obtain official confirmation of the Kwara Central stakeholders’ endorsement were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report, as party officials declined to comment on internal deliberations.

As political activities gradually gather pace ahead of 2027, analysts say such developments are likely to shape the contours of alliances, rivalries, and negotiations within Kwara’s evolving political landscape.
