The widow of late Nollywood actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, has appealed to Nigerians for assistance, saying she and her children are facing severe financial hardship and struggling to meet basic needs.
In a video interview with content creator King Mitchy on Wednesday, Mr Ibu’s wife and children opened up about their living conditions since the actor’s death.
Speaking emotionally, the widow revealed that the family has been without electricity for about two months after their power supply was disconnected over unpaid bills. She added that they now rely on water from a well and have to look for places to charge their mobile phones at night.
She also disclosed that she has been unable to pay house rent and that her children are at risk of dropping out of school because of outstanding fees. According to her, the school had sent a message regarding the unpaid fees.
One of the actor’s daughters commended her mother for keeping the family together despite the challenges, saying she has continued to provide food, pay school fees whenever possible, and ensure the children remain happy.
King Mitchy, who conducted the interview, said support is being sought to help the family settle rent arrears, pay school fees, and restore electricity to their home.
Mr Ibu, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated comic actors, died on 2 March 2024 at the age of 62.
