Experience matters in politics—but experience becomes truly valuable when it produces results.
That is the next question that the 2027 conversation in Abia North must confront.
If Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has accumulated decades of experience in the executive and legislative arms of government, what can that experience mean for the people of Abia North?
The answer lies in one word: leverage.
Political representation is not simply about occupying an office. It is about using the opportunities that come with that office to attract attention, resources, programmes and interventions to the constituency.
For a constituency such as Abia North, this distinction is important.
From Representation to Influence
Every senator has one vote.
But not every senator has the same level of institutional influence.
Senators operate within political networks, committees, party structures and relationships with government agencies. These networks can determine how effectively constituency interests are presented, negotiated and pursued.
Kalu’s political career gives him familiarity with these structures.
He has served as a member of the House of Representatives. He has governed a state. He has served multiple terms in the Senate. He has also occupied a leadership position within the Senate.
That experience creates an important possibility: the ability to move beyond simply making demands to understanding how demands can be pursued within the system.

Nigeria’s federal structure means that many of the major interventions capable of transforming communities depend on institutions outside the immediate control of state governments.
Federal roads.
Federal institutions.
Education programmes.
Healthcare interventions.
Employment and empowerment schemes.
Agricultural programmes.
Industrial and investment initiatives.
Infrastructure projects.
Appointments to federal agencies.
Access to these opportunities often requires persistent engagement with ministries, departments, agencies and political decision-makers.
A senator with experience navigating Abuja’s political and administrative environment may therefore have an advantage.
But again, the principle is simple:
Access must become action.
The Southeast Dimension
There is also a broader regional consideration.
The Southeast has historically faced concerns about infrastructure, federal presence, industrial development, youth unemployment and equitable participation in national opportunities.
Kalu’s position within the Senate places him in a position to participate in conversations concerning the region beyond the boundaries of Abia North.
His reported involvement with the Southeast Development Commission adds another dimension to that responsibility.
The question, therefore, is not only what can be achieved for individual communities.
It is also about how Abia North can position itself within the larger development conversation taking place around the Southeast.
A constituency that produces influential political actors should be able to benefit from that influence.
Why Committee Influence Matters
One of the least understood aspects of the Senate is the importance of committees.
Much of the detailed legislative, oversight and policy work of the National Assembly takes place through committees.
Committee positions can provide opportunities to interact with ministers, permanent secretaries, heads of agencies and other public officials responsible for implementing government policies.
They can also provide access to information and institutional processes that are less visible to the general public.
This makes legislative experience particularly relevant.
A senator who understands how committees work, how budgets are examined and how oversight can be deployed has more tools available to pursue constituency interests.
The objective should not be political visibility for its own sake.
The objective should be developmental visibility for Abia North.
The Constituency Question
What does Abia North need from its senator over the next four years?
The answer should go beyond political slogans.
The constituency needs representation that can pursue:
– better roads and infrastructure;
– improved educational opportunities;
– stronger healthcare interventions;
– youth employment and skills development;
– support for small and medium-sized businesses;
– agricultural and industrial investment;
– federal government programmes;
– strategic projects capable of stimulating local economies; and
– stronger access to national opportunities.
These demands are not unique to Abia North.
What may distinguish one representative from another is the ability to pursue them consistently and strategically.
The Power of Political Capital
Every experienced politician accumulates what can be described as political capital.
Political capital comes from relationships, reputation, experience, institutional familiarity and the confidence of other political actors.
2027: A Test of Political Capital
The 2027 election should therefore be viewed not merely as another contest for a Senate seat.
It should be a test of what political experience can deliver.
Kalu enters that conversation with an unusual political background: former federal legislator, former governor and serving senator.
That history provides him with institutional knowledge.
His political relationships provide access.
His experience provides familiarity with the machinery of government.
Abia North will be positioned for greatness and accelerated development with Senator Orji Uzor Kalu returning back to the saddle.
