The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Igbona Ward, Oyun Local Government Area of Kwara State, on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, received scores of defectors from the All Progressives Congress (APC) at a mega rally held in Igbona town.
The rally, which witnessed a massive turnout of party faithful, youth groups, women leaders and elders, was described by observers as a strong signal of PDP’s growing strength in Oyun Local Government ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The decampees, who came from various polling units across Igbona Ward, were formally received by Alhaji Tunde Salahudeen, a stalwart of the PDP in the ward, alongside other leaders of the party in Oyun Local Government.
In his welcome address, Alhaji Salahudeen said the decision of the former APC members to join the PDP was a testament to the people’s yearning for credible leadership and purposeful governance. He assured them of equal treatment, full integration and opportunities to contribute to the growth of the party in the ward and the local government at large.
“Our party, the PDP, is a party for all. We do not discriminate. We are happy to receive our brothers and sisters who have seen the light and decided to join us to rescue Kwara South and Kwara State. In Igbona Ward, PDP is one family and you are now part of this family,” Salahudeen stated.
Speaking on behalf of the decampees, one of the leaders of the defectors said they left the APC due to what he described as lack of internal democracy, neglect of grassroots members and failure to deliver dividends of democracy to the people of Igbona.
He added that after wide consultations, they resolved to pitch their tent with the PDP, which according to him, remains the only party that understands the needs of the people of Kwara South.
The rally featured solidarity speeches from PDP ward executives, youth and women leaders, who pledged to work tirelessly to ensure victory for the party in the forthcoming elections.
They also commended Alhaji Tunde Salahudeen for his consistent leadership, generosity and commitment to keeping the PDP united and strong in Igbona Ward.
The event ended with chants of solidarity and assurance from party members to intensify ward-to-ward mobilization across Oyun Local Government.
Political analysts in the area say the defection marks a major boost for the PDP in Oyun LG, which is considered a strategic battleground in Kwara South politics.
