KWAYORG Stands Firm Against Division, Rejects IEYDA’s Discordant Demands

By Lawal Merit Ifeoma

Kwara South Youth Development Organization (KWAYORG) strongly condemns the recent press statement issued by the Ilorin Emirate Youth Development Association (IEYDA), which seeks to sow seeds of discord and rewrite the history of our beloved state.

In a joint press release signed by the Acting President of the organization, Ariyo Stephen Odeyemi, the Secretary, Elemosho Ridwan and New Media Director ll, Maxwell David in response to IEYDA’s call to rename the University of Ilorin and hang the Emir’s portrait in government offices and formal institutions within the Ilorin Emirate community, the group asserts that these demands are both unnecessary and divisive.

Regarding the proposal to rename the University of Ilorin, KWAYORG emphasizes that the university is a symbol of heritage for all Kwarans, not just the Ilorin Emirate. While we respect the legacy of Sheik Alimi, renaming the university is deemed unacceptable as it disregards the collective ownership of this esteemed institution by all Kwarans. If the IEYDA wants an institution to be named after the revered scholar, they can approach NUC, get approval for such, and build a new institution that will outlive them all. This is more honorary than wanting to claim ownership of an existing university.

Furthermore, KWAYORG finds IEYDA’s suggestion to hang the Emir’s portrait in government offices and formal institutions as unnecessary and contrary to the principles of inclusivity and unity. The Emir’s role is revered within the Ilorin Emirate, but such a proposal overlooks the diverse cultural and religious landscape of Kwara State.

Additionally, the expresses disappointment in IEYDA’s opposition to situating the proposed Kwara State University of Education in Kwara South. This move is seen as selfish and neglectful of the development needs of other regions within the state.

“Kwara South deserves equitable access to educational opportunities and infrastructure, and the proposed university would contribute significantly to the region’s growth and progress.” the statement added

KWAYORG reaffirms its commitment to promoting unity, inclusivity, and the equitable distribution of resources across Kwara State. We stand in solidarity with our elders and urge His Excellency, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq, to uphold the values of harmony and progress that define our state. Governor Abdulrasaq should understand that legacy holds more value than mere currency. Everybody lives, but not everyone leaves a good legacy. We pray and hope you will leave a good legacy in the heart of Kwara southerners as you govern the state.

As custodians of the future, we call on all stakeholders to prioritize the well-being and development of all Kwarans, regardless of their ethnic or regional affiliations. Let us work together to build a prosperous and united Kwara State for generations to come.
