Dr Saudat Salah Abdul Baqi, a University Don from the Mass Communication Department of the University of Ilorin and the immediate past chairman of the Kwara State chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), has been elected into the twenty-two-member Governing Council of the institute.
Dr Abdul Baqi received 713 votes in the national convention, which lasted until the early hours of the morning.
Dr Ikechukwu Neliaku won the presidency with 830 votes, defeating Nkechi Ali Balogun of the Lagos chapter, who received 375 votes.
Alhaji Lanre Issa Onilu, the former National Publicity Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress, also secured a position as one of the five Federal government-appointed members of the Governing Council.
Professor Emmanuel Dan Daura was elected as the Vice Chairman of NIPR, while other members of the council include Professor Kate Azuka, Professor Sarah Benjamin, Dr Adewale Oladipo, Dr Sule Ya’u Sule, Bashir Adamu Chedi, Adaramola Temitope, Kabir Ali Kobi, Okoh Thelma Chika, Olubunmi Adedoyin, and Akin Agbejule.
In his acceptance speech, the new President, Dr Neliaku, promised to use his mandate to rebrand the nation and serve humanity.
He also pledged to ensure that only professionals practice public relations and praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Alhaji Muhammed Idris Malagi, a core professional, as the new Minister of Information and Culture.
