Four Explosions Strikes Sweden in One Night

By Nurat Uthman

According to police, bomb squad experts have been summoned after Swedish cities experienced four explosions within a little over an hour.

The country is struggling to control a surge of gang-related violence.

Police in Gothenburg received reports of two separate explosions, just 10 minutes apart, shortly after 1:00 am local time (2300 GMT).

Both locations have been sealed off, and technical investigations are underway. The national bomb squad has been dispatched to the scene.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, only damage to property, as stated by the police.

Approximately an hour later, two more explosions, occurring minutes apart, were reported in Norsborg (a suburb south of Stockholm) and Nykoping (approximately 100 kilometers south of the capital).

Police confirmed that no one was harmed in either incident. All four explosions targeted residential buildings.

In recent years, Sweden has grappled with an increase in shootings and bombings, largely driven by gang disputes fueled by the drug trade.

However, Gothenburg police informed AFP that it is currently too early to speculate on the motive behind the two explosions in the city.

According to police data, Sweden witnessed 90 explosions and 101 cases of attempted bombings or preparations for bombings in 2022. As of August 15, 109 detonations have been recorded this year.

Authorities have previously stated that bombs are primarily used to intimidate targets, while shootings are employed to kill and eliminate adversaries.

Police data reveals that in 2022, the country recorded 391 shootings, 62 of which were fatal, compared to 45 the previous year.
