In anticipation of moderate to heavy rainfall expected on Thursday, September 28th, and Friday, September 29th, 2023, the Kwara State Government has issued an urgent advisory to all residents. This advisory comes as part of the state’s proactive measures to mitigate potential risks associated with the impending weather conditions.
In a statement released today by the Kwara State Commissioner for Communications, Hon. Bolanle Olukoju, The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted heavy rainfall across 25 states, including Kwara State, within the next 48 hours.
The statement highlights, “Kwara State is expected to experience heavy rainfall today and tomorrow, in line with NiMet’s weekly heavy rainfall forecast bulletin. This early warning is crucial to help residents prepare and prevent potential natural disasters.”
Hon. Olukoju further emphasised, “NiMet has cautioned that the forecasted rainfall may result in flash floods in specific areas.” In light of this, Kwarans are strongly advised to take the following precautions:
1. Avoid Driving Through Surface Runoff Waters: Motorists should steer clear of roads with visible surface water runoff, as it may pose risks to vehicles and passengers.
2. Exercise Caution on Slippery Roads: Due to the rainfall, roads may become slippery, increasing the risk of accidents. Residents are encouraged to drive carefully and be mindful of road conditions.
3. Be Mindful of Reduced Visibility: Heavy rainfall often leads to reduced visibility on the roads. Pedestrians and motorists should exercise extra vigilance during this period.
Hon. Olukoju concluded, “Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of all Kwara residents. By taking these precautionary measures, we can collectively ensure the safety of our community as the state faces this weather challenge.”
