Preparations are underway by the Kwara State Government to further boost the immunity of children less than 5 years against polio virus and other children killer diseases through the Kwara State Primary Health Care Development Agency.
The Executive Secretary Kwara State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Nusirat Elelu disclosed this yesterday while officially flagging off this year round of the National Immunization plus day in Ilorin East Local Government of the State. Dr. Elelu stated that Kwara State is one of the few states that have not reported any cases of circulating Vaccine derived Polio Virus this year.
She noted that though Nigeria was certified wild Polio virus free on 25th August 2020, there are presently some other related strains of the virus isolated in some states in the country.
Dr. Elelu noted that this year National Immunization Plus Day is aimed at protecting Children below 5years of age from Poliomyelitis and it is scheduled to commence on Saturday 30th to Tuesday 2nd November 2023 in all the 16 LGAS in the state irrespective of their previous immunization status.
Elelu further disclosed that Health workers will visit Houses, Markets, Churches, Mosques, Schools and places of Social gathering to administer 2 drops of the Oral Polio Vaccine in the mouth of eligible children irrespective of their previous immunization status.
The Executive Secretary enjoined Mothers, Caregivers, Religious leaders and Traditional leaders to kindly co-operate with Health workers during this period to prevent incurable Paralysis, adding that the vaccine is free, safe and has no overdose.
Dr. Elelu appreciated the Kwara State Government under the leadership of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his Commitments in prioritizing the Health sector by ensuring that health facilities are renovated so that the good people of Kwara state have access to quality health care services at affordable rate.
In his remark, the Director of Primary Health Care System, Dr. Michael Oguntoye also implored Parents, especially mothers to make use of this opportunity to ensure that their children are immunized
