The need to care for the elderly in the society was the focus during a day training on geriatric for the elderly people in the Kwara south senatorial district.
The training organized by the National Biotechnology Development Agency in conjunction with ABITAT Konzultants Ltd and facilitated by Senator Lola Ashiru was held at Offa Local Government.
According to the United Nations, a person who is over 60 years old is an older person while middle age is 40 to 60 years.
The trainer, Miss Mustapha Aisha Akorede said geriatric is the branch of medicine that deals with the care and health of the elderly people. She stated that the aim of the training was to provide specific health needs for the elderly, to promote the psychological and physiological well-being of the elderly and to ensure that the elderly people are less dependent on people around them so that they can equally do some basic things by themselves.
She highlighted common geriatric problems, how to identify the problems, geriatric care challenges, important of geriatric care, preventions and treatment.
Earlier, the representative of Senator Lola Ashiru, Hon Omuiyadun encouraged participants to pay attention to the training and ensure they use the knowledge when needed.
He assured the people of Kwara South that his principal, senator Lola Ashiru will continue to facilitate programmes and interventions that would have direct impact on the constituents.
The representatives of National Biotechnology Development Agency, Mr Salau appreciated the senator for prioritizing the health of the people. He also urged participants to make effective use of the knowledge.
Participants who were selected from Offa, Ifelodun and Oyun local government expressed their gratitude to the senator representing Kwara South Senatorial district distinguished Senator Lola Ashiru for taking the well being of the elderly people in the society seriously. They assured him that the knowledge gained would be used effectively.
