Group Condemns Monarchs’ Endorsement of North’s Governorship Bid Amidst Insecurity Crisis in Kwara

The Kwara South Youth Congress, a pro-democracy organization dedicated to advocating for the rights and welfare of citizens and residents in the Kwara South region, has publicly condemned the recent endorsements made by several traditional rulers in the area concerning the upcoming 2027 elections. This criticism is particularly focused on the stark contrast between these endorsements and the ongoing wave of insecurity that has been plaguing the community.

In an official statement released by the group’s publicity secretary, Adejare Bashir, he expressed grave concern regarding what the congress views as a severe misalignment of priorities during a time of crisis. Bashir stated, “It is deeply unfortunate that in recent months, Kwara South has become increasingly vulnerable, witnessing a significant surge in incidents of kidnapping and banditry. Over 200 individuals have been abducted from our region alone, while many others have tragically lost their lives. Our traditional leaders have faced displacement from their palaces, and places of worship have been subjected to attacks. Despite the rising toll of violence and the payment of ransoms, it appears that our revered traditional rulers are primarily focused on endorsing a candidate from Kwara North. This behavior demonstrates a profound disrespect toward the victims who have perished and their grieving families.”

He continued, “Our respected traditional rulers must prioritize the interests of our people above all else at every opportunity. As we look toward the future, there are several aspirants from.Kwara South across different political parties who are keenly interested in running for the governorship of Kwara State in 2027. If the recent actions taken by our traditional rulers were indeed rooted in the principles of justice and equity, it is imperative that they exhibit fairness in their public dealings. Unfortunately, it appears they have chosen a partisan path in this situation.

In all their gatherings, the traditional rulers have consistently aligned themselves with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party. This was notably evident during their initial meeting at Ajase Ipo High School a few months ago, which many viewed as nothing more than a proxy endorsement of the current governor. This pattern continued when they met with traditional leaders from Kwara North last Monday, its a consistent bias that undermines their role as neutral figures in our communities.

It is essential to recognize the dynamics at play in the quest for power. Our revered traditional rulers must uphold their responsibility to remain neutral; they are paternal figures for all and should not allow themselves to engage in actions that ultimately bring ridicule to the people of Kwara South.

At this juncture, it is equally vital to urge aspirants from Kwara South across various political parties to amplify their efforts as we approach the upcoming elections. We also call upon various organizations within Kwara South—such as the Igbomina Youth Assembly, KWAYORG, Kwara South Youth Assembly, Ekiti Navigators, Ibolo Peoples Congress, and others—to continue fulfilling their roles as independent entities. Their contributions are crucial for the advancement and betterment of our region as we strive for a more equitable and just future. The statement concluded.”
