The political landscape of Kwara State witnessed a major political shift on Tuesday as thousands of All Progressives Congress (APC) faithful, stakeholders, and traditional rulers converged on the Metropolitan Square, Ilorin, for a mega rally to endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election and demand that the 2027 governorship be zoned to Kwara North.
The event, organized by the Kwara North Stakeholders, was a significant show of strength and unity, featuring a rare symbolic moment where leading gubernatorial aspirants from the region joined hands to pledge their commitment to a collective northern agenda.
In a powerful demonstration of regional solidarity, a cross-section of Kwara North’s traditional institution graced the rally. The royal fathers in attendance included the Emir of Lafiagi, Emir of Shonga, Emir of Okuta, Emir of Ilesa, Emir of Gwanara, Etsu Tsaragi, Etsu Patigi, and the Emir of Kaiama.
Speaking on behalf of the traditional council, the Emir of Lafiagi, His Royal Highness Muhammed Kudu Kawu, stated that the agitation for a power shift is a reflection of the longstanding aspirations for equity, fairness, and justice. He appealed to stakeholders in Kwara Central and South to support the region, noting that such a gesture would solidify the state’s status as the State of Harmony.

Issa Bio Ibrahim delivering the welcome address, while the member representing Edu/Moro/Patigi Federal Constituency, Hon. Adamu Ahmed Saba provided the keynote speech with both speaker emphasizing that President Tinubu’s reforms deserve continuity, while simultaneously arguing that Kwara North’s historical loyalty to the APC warrants a shot at the state’s top job in 2027.
This was further echoed by a former Commissioner, Hon. Abdulmumini Katibi and the Kwara Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Musa Nafisah Buge who spoke on behalf of the Kwara North women.
The major point of the rally was the appearance of the region’s top gubernatorial contenders on the podium. In a move that drew ecstatic cheers from the crowd, the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Salihu Yakubu Danladi; Senator Sadiq Umar, Alhaji Tajudeen Abdulkadir Audu (Makama Lafiagi) and Rt. Hon. Mohammed Omar Bio joined hands to showcase their commitment to working as a single block.
The aspirants emphasized that they are putting personal ambitions aside to ensure the Kwara North Senatorial District produces the next governor, regardless of which individual eventually clinches the party ticket.
