A former member of the House of Representatives and a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, Hon. Mashood Mustapha, popularly known as MM, is reportedly finalising plans to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to a top PDP member who spoke on condition of anonymity, arrangements are already underway to formally receive MM and his loyalists into the party.
“MM is not new to the PDP. He was part of the party’s inner circle before joining the APC alongside our leader, Dr. Bukola Saraki, in 2014. Although he did not return with us in 2018, his expected move now is more like a homecoming, and we are ready to welcome him,” the source said.
Another source close to MM confirmed that consultations are ongoing, noting that multiple political options remain under consideration as part of broader efforts to reposition Kwara State.
“There are ongoing discussions about the best path forward for Kwara. MM will speak for himself at the appropriate time,” the source added, declining to confirm the defection outrightly.
When contacted for an official response, MM’s Head of Media, Dr. Opeyemi Aregbesola, said “Please be patient. Our position will be made public in due course.”
While no formal announcement has been made, political observers note that any eventual defection by MM could significantly alter the dynamics of the 2027 governorship race in Kwara State.
The Isale Aluko-born politician is widely regarded as a seasoned political strategist and was instrumental in the 2018/2019 “O To Ge” political movement that reshaped the state’s power structure. His potential reunion with Dr. Bukola Saraki is also seen as a development that could reconfigure alliances ahead of the next election cycle.
